National Self-Injury Awareness Day

Welcome to The Writing World and our way of bringing awareness to such an important day. For those who don't know today is National Self Injury Awareness Day.

What is Self Injury (Self Harm)?

Self harm is any deliberate, non-suicidal behavior that inflicts physical injury to a persons body. It's essentially a way to cope that enables one to deal with intense emotional distress and creates a calming sensation. It can also be used as a way to "awaken" a person who feels numb or dissociated with the world around them.

Self harm has an immediate effect which creates an instant relief but it's only temporary. Any underlying emotions still remain. Over time, self injury can become a persons automatic response to ordinary strains of life and the severity of self harm can increase.

Self injury can affect everyone from all types of lifestyles. The age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or personal strength doesn't matter.

There are certain forms of self injury that are talked about more than others but if one has found a unique way to hurt themselves, it's still self injury. When one self harms, there's not a severity level or scale. Any type of self harm is "bad" enough for a person to get help. Every person who suffers from self harm deserves help. Some people often feel they don't deserve help and it can feel scary. It is essential to get immediate medical attention if a self inflicted wound seems serious.

Please be aware that self injury is normally a non-suicidal behavior and is NOT a way for a person to get attention. It's an emotional condition that deserves attention. Emotional distress and stress can lead to self injury and can eventually lead into suicide if not treated professionally.

Ways to Get Help

If you self harm and are thinking of seeking help it can be really hard at first. One moment it may seem like it's easy to talk about at one moment and much harder the next. The first step you can take is to talk to someone you trust. This can be a close friend, family member, teacher, or counselor.  Remember when talking to this trusted person, it may upset them to hear that you self harm. They aren't judging you. It may upset them because they care for you and it hurts to know that you've turned to self harm for your emotional support. Give your trusted person time to "digest" what you are telling them. Then the both of you can create a plan for recovery. As an example, where to go for medical attention before a more serious problem occurs.

My Child Self Injures....What Next?

The first discovery of your child using self harm as their coping mechanism can be hard. You may feel a mixture of shock, anger, guilt, worry, and this can upset you. Try to remember not to panic or over react. Your initial reaction will have a great impact on your child. It may affect how much they're willing to tell you or even stop them from opening up to you. Each situation is different. The way you react can depend on several factors, which include your child's age, reason behind their self harm, and the way you found out. (Example: They came to you or you discovered their self injury by accident.)

You may want to consider educating your self as much as you can on the subject to get a better understanding. Remember not to show disgust or anger, which can increase your child's emotional distress. From the start of you finding out, remember that you are NOT to blame for your child self harming.

Be sure you make it clear to your child that you are there to support him/her in any way. Acknowledge that self injury is a secretive behavior and the fact that you know about it can be overwhelming. Your child may need time to get used to the idea that you know before talking to anyone else.

Remember to focus on the underlying problem and not the self harm. Self harm takes time to give up. Be prepared for many months of recovery and don't ask them to stop. Do not prevent them from self injury by forcing them to stop and removing the tools they have come to rely on to cope. Before this can be done, a healthier coping mechanism must be found first.

Offer to take your child to a doctor and even suggest your support by showing you're willing to go with them. Do not force your child. If they decline the offer of your presence at the doctor, respect their privacy and confidentiality. Never ask your child to see their self harm injuries unless you think it may need medical attention. This will embarrass them and cause them to become more secretive about their situation. Remember you want them to open up, not push you away!

Do not treat your child any different. They are still the same person you knew and loved before you found out about their disorder. Never treat your child any different around others. This too can embarrass them.  Encourage your child to seek healthier ways once a medical professional is involved and their openly talking about their self harm.

Silenced.... What Others Are Saying.....#depression & #selfharm

PLEASE SHARE AND THANK YOU.

Silenced by RaeBeth McGee will leave you on the edge of your seat and feeling the emotions the main character feels. It dives into self harm and depression to bring awareness to these matters. Here are what some have said about this amazing book.

"I think people need to read this book and get a perspective on what actually happens and how depression affects us all!!!"

"I was overwhelmed with emotional..... Landon & Amber have such a warm, yet cold story.... I'm sad for Sarah too.... It was nice to see Amber and her mother finally getting along.... No one should have to go through something like this alone.... Its like a drug.... Get help!!!! This is a big eye open!!!!"

"Raebeth McGee has written a powerful story that is a MUST READ. Her descriptive words, and the flow of the story, carried me on a roller coaster of emotions. I shed more than a few tears, so a tissue may come in handy! I highly recommend this book to the older YA age range (15+) and adults alike."

#Silenced Blog Tour- Day 3

Welcome to the third stop within the Silenced Blog Tour.
(Temp Post)

This post originally was supposed to be posted on Readers After Dark with a review.

Advice for Beginning Writers
by RaeBeth McGee (Buda)
Being an author, I am asked so many different questions by those who have crossed my path. I’ve taken time before writing this post to seriously think about the advice I would write about. Through out the four years of writing Silenced, I have been given so much advice. So, here is the advice I found helpful within that time.

Write and write everyday. To better improve your craft, a writer should write everyday. It doesn’t have to be within a novel. It can be within a blog post, journal, etc. Those who are serious when it comes to writing always make time for it. It’s one of the most simple ways to get better. It’s a way to keep your writing flowing smoothly and will help you spot your weak areas when writing.

Start off by writing what you’re familiar with. It’s hard when you come across something you’re not familiar with and you need to write about it. This tends to stress new writers out which may tend to make them think they don’t have it in them. Everyone can write when they try and practice.

Read. I think one can’t write without reading. A writer can’t write without the ability to read their own work. This is helpful when it comes to proof reading to find mistakes within their books. It’s helpful to see what books are selling and which ones don’t. Therefore, giving the writer an idea of where their book may fall.

So in closing I feel these are the most important: WRITE AND READ!!!

Feedback on Silenced

I wanted to share with you some of the reviews I got from Silenced. I'm so proud and excited to have this type of feedback.

5 star review: "I have gone through depression most of my life, I have never been able to put into words the feelings that I feel every day of my life. The beautiful Miss Raebeth did that for me. I could not believe my eyes as I read Amber's feelings and the darkness that enveloped her I literally had tears rolling down my cheeks. I am actually going to take this book w
ith me to my next therapist appointment, I have each page marked on a piece of paper so I can easily look it up while talking, and I will FINALLY be able to express in words how I feel inside. I have never resorted to cutting as Amber did but I totally understand the release that it gave her.

I got more and more mad at her mother as the story went on, the bold out right lies were atrocious! I was on the edge of my seat and unfortunately I am STILL on the edge of my seat! I want more! I cannot wait to see what happens in the upcoming books. I pray they come out soon because I am hanging by a thread just as I was hanging by Raebeths every word!

I would recommend this book to anyone with children/teenagers whether you think they might be depressed or not, or family members/friends that might be going through difficult times because this truly gives a great perspective into the mind of someone who might have the same feelings as Amber did throughout the book. at the end of the book I was SHOCKED! everything is going so great for Amber and then.....AAAHHH!!!

Great job Raebeth! I, as said before, cannot wait for the next book!" - Jessica S.

 5 star review
was excited to read this book as it was given to me for an honest review, and I could tell by reading about the book that I have not read anything else like it before. I was not disappointed after I got into the book. Amber's journey starts out with a move to a new home, learning that a truth she has known all her life turns out to be a lie, she starts cutting
herself for release. Everything that she feels as a reader I could feel, the descriptions of the scenes in the book were amazingly well written.

As I took the journey through Amber's eyes, I wanted to know more about her, about her life in general and more about the lie she's lived with all her life. Finding out the truth at a time when she did, caused Amber to spiral down into the darkness, depression sets in and she starts cutting for release. At this point I wanted to reach into the story and help her as I would with anyone whom I know in real life. She becomes friends with a few from her new school and things start to look up for Amber, her friend Casey is like a new sister to her. She also meets Landon and hits it off pretty well, he turns out to be her rock, something she can look forward too and this helps her to keep from cutting so much.

The author ends on a note that has me curious, wondering what is to come and wanting to know more. I can't help it author's all have a tendency to do this to readers, some more than others. As I finished Silenced (Silenced Series) all I kept thinking about is what's next, I want to read on. And that my dear readers is what every reader wants in a book, any book they read. ♥ You Raebeth, be sure to let me know when I can expect your next book! - Julia Hendrix

"I was gifted a copy of this book by the author. This is a deep look into Amber's life. Amber is a troubled teen who finds out the man she calls dad is actually her step father. After finding this out the family moves into a new town for her senior year. Amber meets Casey who quickly becomes her only friend. Casey is also troubled and can
easily relate to Amber. Amber's life turns around after meeting Landon and quickly falls in love with him. This story is full of shocking events but gives you a great view into the life of a cutter. I can't wait to read the next book, the cliff hanger at the end still has me shocked!" - Lauren Alumbaugh (5 stars)

Silenced Update

As promised..... I am here with another update for my upcoming book... Silenced. I got the first round of edits back from my editor. She's amazing. Here's a little on what she had to say about Silenced.

Silenced is powerful and challenging, yet still an extremely enjoyable story. You're a very talented writer. Your characters are so real. Amber is a super heroine - flawed but fighting her darkness, interesting and spirited. You handle the present tense extremely well. It's harder than most people realize to write in, and you make it look effortless! I was really gripped by the story and I know readers will be too. It's a fantastic debut novel.

That is very exciting to hear. Especially seeing how she's the first to see my baby since the rewrite. I'm counting down the days until I can begin the beta reading and then eventually the release.

I'm working on the edits she's suggested and then Silenced will be ready for professional edit round two. Once that is done and I fix anything there, I can begin formatting it for publication. I cannot express how excited I am to put this book out there.

Thank you for stopping by for the update. Have a great week.

Character Interview: Amber Brown

Character Interview with Amber Brown
Leading character from Silenced by RaeBeth McGee-Buda
Coming Early 2013

When it comes to the world of books, what do you think is the most important? There's been talk that others are saying the characters because without them... the book wouldn't go on.

Personally I think there are two things that are important when it comes to books. The author and the characters. The authors create the characters and the characters make a book come alive.

Therefore, I'd like to welcome Amber Brown from Silenced. She's here to tell us her deep dark secrets and what we can look forward to with Silenced.

If you aren't sure which book I'm talking about... please see the description below to learn more before we begin our interview.

Coming Early 2013

Amber Brown spent her entire existence believing Dave was her father. When her mother reveals this is untrue, she goes through an emotional spiral with depression. It's hard for her to believe her mother had lied to her all this time.

A move to a new home and town causes Amber to be consumed by her "darkness" and reverts to cutting to free herself from her pain.

When Casey, her new friend enters her life, she introduces Amber to parties, drugs, and Amber's new boyfriend Landon. The secret of cutting begins to take affect on Amber as she tries to hide it from her friends and family. In the mist of everything, Amber has the desire to find out who her biological father is.

Follow Amber through her trials of depression and cutting, along with the discovery of love.

Okay now that we are on the same page..... Amber welcome to The Writing World. It's great having you here.

HELLO AMBER. PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF.

Hello, I'm Amber Brown. I am seventeen years old and I'm about to graduate from high school. I live in Morgantown, West Virginia.

ITS GREAT TO MEET YOU. I'M HAPPY TO HAVE YOU HERE. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?

I would like to say thank you to the author who created me. I'm glad RaeBeth is willing to share my story and get depression known. I think the subject is too hushed and people need to be more aware.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE AUTHOR?

I think she's a bit bossy. Like when I'm not in the mood to do something...she makes me do it anyway. She's pushy. Although I am happy that she wrote my story with a great ending, which I know readers will enjoy. The only thing they won't like is having to wait to see what happens. My story will end in Silenced:The Overtaking which we are working hard on finishing. I really enjoy what she did with my life in that one.

WHAT IS YOUR WISH FOR YOUR STORY?

I just want it to be heard. I understand that cutting and depression is a hard subject for some. But when people turn their heads, others are dying that could have been helped. I hope my story helps someone out there. If one person is saved... then my job is complete.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE IF YOU COULD?

I'd change the way I am. In parts of my story, readers will see what I mean by this. But I acted a bit selfish. There's not much more I can say without giving more away.

WILL WE SEE YOU AGAIN?

Most certainly. I plan on returning after the book is released where I can talk about my story a bit more. I hate keeping secrets. They drive me nuts.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGING WORDS FOR OUR READERS?

Whatever you do... never give up. There's nothing in this life worth taking your own. I'm so happy that I have a great support system. Landon is my... I guess one would say... guardian angel. He was sent from above. He never judged me. He's only ever helped me. Although at first my mom disagreed. Let's see if that can be settled. After it's released, the readers can break the tie. They can say who is right... me or my mom.

ALRIGHT. WE WILL HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. I'VE REALLY ENJOYED TALKING WITH YOU AND LEARNING A BIT MORE ABOUT THE BOOK/YOUR STORY. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT IT.

As for the readers, thank you for taking the time to read this unique character interview. I'm glad you stopped by. Feel free to leave comments below. I'd love to hear from you. Amber... readers.... have a wonderful day.

Exciting News!!!!!

I'm sure you all have been waiting to see what I'm about as an author. Your wait is about to end. I've been in contact with an editor who will be editing my novella Silenced within the next month. YAY!!!!

This book is my baby. I'm sure all authors will say this about their work. It took me four years to write and edit it to my standards for an editor. Some friends and family have read it and love it. I'm so excited to see what you all think.

Are you excited for it's release?

#SixSunday- Silenced (WIP) #5

The new life I'm walking into scares me. I've been so used to doing the same things, I'm not sure if I can do new. I've never been the outspoken person who dives into new things without hesitation or even thought. The sound of a horn pulls me back to the present moment. I didn't realize I stopped in the middle of the parking lot and cars were waiting to get through. I wave as I say, "I'm sorry. Didn't mean it."

 ******************************************************

I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek into my current work in progress. Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments below. If you're visiting from Six Sentence Sunday and would like for me to take a look at yours... feel free to post the link below. Have a wonderful Sunday!!!
