About the Author

Julie mainly confines her writing to three genres: Christian inspirational, YA real-world science fiction, and normal science fiction.

She likes teaching, writing, reading, sleeping, doing puzzles, and hanging out with friends. (Not necessarily in that order)

Writing has made her super picky about the things she reads but normally, her reading list includes something that fits under the thriller, mystery, science fiction, or fantasy.

Occasionally, she attempts short poetry. The poems turn into songs, which she sings with abandon when nobody's looking.

Stepping Off a Cliff by Doug Dillion Blog Tour

Title:  Stepping Off A Cliff
The St. Augustine Trilogy: Book II
Author:  Doug Dillon
Length: 321 Pages
Genre:  YA Paranormal
Released:  November 11, 2013
Presented by:  As You Wish Tours

The Top Ten Historic Events that Impacted your Life?

1.      World War II (1939-1945): As a six-year-old child in 1949, I moved to Germany with my parents for three years. My dad was a member of the U.S. military occupation forces. At that point in time, Germany had not yet fully recovered from its devastation. I got to see the horrible destruction that war can bring to a country and what it can do to its people.

2.      9/11/2001: When I watched those towers fall on TV, the terrible destruction I saw as a child in Germany blasted back into my mind. War had come to my own homeland and I wasn’t prepared for it. This was especially true since my mom and daughter had been in those towers just a few short years before they came down.

3.      The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962): Since I lived in Florida at the time, not too far from Cuba, those very dangerous days were seared into my memory. The danger of nuclear war was ever present but I when I came home from college right in the middle of that event, it all become extremely real. One day, I happened to be standing near the main road going north and south through Orlando when a huge convoy of army trucks, troops and missiles went by. It seemed to go on forever, heading for south Florida.

4.      The Second Seminole War (1835-1842): I write about this war in Book I of The St. Augustine Trilogy because I discovered its importance while visiting the St. Augustine National Cemetery. There I discovered three large stone pyramids covering the bodies of over 1,400 American soldiers killed in all the Florida Seminole Wars.

5.      Just Before the Russian Revolution of 1917: A number of years ago, I had a waking dream of facing a long line on Russian soldiers across a huge snow-coved plaza. There were many other people around me and almost immediately the soldiers began firing. Bullets went through my body and I fell face first into the snow. Strangely, I didn’t notice any pain but I knew I was dying.
As a student of history, I thought what I experienced must have had something to do with the Russian Revolution.  So a week or two after that dream, I spent a lot of time in the library. I searched through history books looking for pictures that might give me a hint if what I saw in my dream had any basis in reality. After several hours of effort, I found the exact scene but it was in 1905, not 1917, the official date of the Russian Revolution. I had forgotten that there was a smaller 1905 revolt against the Czar in St. Petersburg where Russian soldiers killed hundreds of protestors.

6.      The Assassination of John F. Kennedy (1963): I was in college then and n my view, Jack Kennedy represented young America and all that was good in our country. His assassination brought home to me the harsh realities of the world as it is and not as I hoped it would be.

7.      The Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion (1986): From my home in the Orlando Florida area, I had watched many a shuttle launch even though Cape Kennedy was 50 miles away. But on that day in 1986, I was teaching 7th grade geography when the news came of the explosion. I’ll never forget watching TV with my students as we all stared in horror.

8.      Hurricane Donna (1960): I was a senior in a Florida high school that year when the storm hit. At first, I thought it was going to be great fun. But when those raging winds started really howling and forcing torrential rains through the concrete block walls of my family’s home, I realized then that Mother Nature was nothing to trifle with.

9.      The Vietnam War (1964-1975): Growing up in a military family as I did, I believed that whenever the U.S. used it might against other nations it had to be the right move. In my eyes, we were the good guys all the time, just as we were in World War II. But as the deaths mounted in Vietnam, I learned the bitter truth that we could indeed be wrong.

10.  First Moon Landing (1969): I’ve always been fascinated with astronomy and the contents of our universe but to actually see people land on another world blew my mind. And to me, it showed humankind could literally accomplish anything.

One lost love.

One lost best friend.

One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

EXCERPT

Where was Echo? What had they done with him? If they’d ganged up on him…

I sighed. There was nothing I could do now without letting them all know my secret. I should have told the blonde not to say anything. Mom’s voice cut through my thoughts.

“Raine can come home with us, Svana,” Mom said.

No, I wanted to protest. Echo wouldn’t visit me if Raine was around. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I realized how selfish that sounded.

“You should, Raine,” I repeated Mom’s offer.

Raine shook her head. “I can’t.”

“That’s nice of you to offer, Penny,” Svana Cooper said, “but my sister arrived this evening and will keep an eye on her. In fact, the boys should take her home now.” Raine’s mother waved to the Valkyries.

In the years I’d known the Coopers, I’d never heard her or Raine mention her family. “You have an aunt?” I asked.

“More like a half-sister of my mom’s. They were estranged, but they recently made up.”

“Could you take Raine home, Torin?” Mrs. Cooper asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” Torin said, but Raine was already shaking her head.

“No,” Raine said. “I’m not leaving until Dad wakes up. I have to know that he’s going to be okay.”

“Oh, sweetie,” her mother said, cupping her face. “I know how you feel. I’m going to be here keeping an eye on him. Nothing is going to happen to him without me knowing. And the minute he regains consciousness, I’ll call you.”

“The only thing you kids need to know is to protect the family,” Asan Kiverson said. His gaze bore into each of his children.

Kevin, the eldest, returned his gaze steadily.

Angela, the middle child, nodded hesitantly, so Asan gave her a reassuring smile.

His smile faded when he looked at his youngest child. “What’s the matter, Benjamin? Don’t you believe me?”

“Yes, Papa,” the boy murmured.

“That’s my boy. You can choose your own path, but always remember the family protects its own. One day, perhaps you kids will be called upon to protect the family.”

Working for the FBI certainly isn’t a “normal” job, but Special Agent Julie Ann Davidson has never encountered a case as personal as this one. Although not officially assigned to the case, Ann and her partner, Patrick Duncan, take up the cause of finding Rachel, Jason, and Emily Collins. As if that task wasn’t enough, Ann and Patrick also have a baffling case of internet thievery to investigate.

Who is Christopher Collins and what about his past is endangering his family? Where are Rachel and the kids being held? Where is God in the midst of chaos? Will Ann and Patrick arrive in time or will they find only pain?

 EXCERPT

After work on Thursday, Rachel Collins stopped at the grocery store for basics and something special for dinner. Having heard many horrible stories, she didn’t dare leave the children alone in the car. Warnings about best behavior fell upon deaf ears. Somewhere, she found the patience to tolerate Jason and Emily’s childish antics.

“Why you frown, Mommy?” Jason asked.

“I’m just tired, Jay,” replied Rachel. Her mind took a trip back to the office where a thousand little things had gone wrong. The secretary’s morning car accident had added considerable stress to Rachel’s hectic life. Her trust in God’s sovereignty didn’t make lousy days any easier to live through.

For years she had believed Christ to be mere church rhetoric. Finally, during a particularly rough college year, she had accepted God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. It pained her that Chris avoided church. Come Sunday, Rachel forced a bright smile, sang in the choir, helped in the nursery, and coordinated other children’s ministries. In fact, she kept herself so busy with work, kids, and church that her spiritual walk floundered. Stress and bills were her biggest problems, but she understood that they allowed her family light, food, warmth, and a fine home in the great state of Pennsylvania. She knew the ‘could-haves’ and the ‘what-ifs’ could drive her mad so she decided not to worry about the future.

“When we get home, you need a nap,” Jason said.

Her son’s solemn suggestion drew Rachel back to the present. She chuckled softly. Children were a blessing, even if they did jump all over her nerves sometimes.

“Cookies!” Emily shouted, pointing with a tiny finger.

Annoyed at herself for wandering down the wrong aisle, Rachel winced at the volume, grabbed Emily’s wildly waving hand, and said, “Hush, sweets, I see them.”

That’s what you get for not paying attention. Oh well, the damage is done. The pantry’s nearly empty anyway.

She let them each pick a favorite and finished the hike to the back corner where the main selection of milk and eggs were located.

Ingenious to put milk in the back, Rachel admitted.

Next, they swung by the fish department where Jason made a face.

Emily covered her nose and announced, “Stinky!”

EXCERPT

Just as our nerves started to settle, an ear-piercing woman’s scream good enough to make straight hair curl tore through us. She started shouting in a foreign language. Christy and I scrambled off the bunk bed and stared at the wall we’d been leaning on. Heavy footsteps rushed past our door and muffled orders mingled with scuffling noises.
Help her, Nadia ordered.
Before I could even raise the issue of how I would help, I found myself pounding on the door and shouting to be let out. It occurred to me to check the lock and I did so, feeling oddly relieved to know it was indeed locked. I’d have looked quite the fool standing there shouting to an unlocked door.
George finally whipped the door open. “What?” he grunted.
“Let me help her. I can calm her. I can speak Russian,” I said, all in a rush.
“You can?” George and Christy asked at the same time.
I can? I mentally fired the question at Nadia.
I can, and if you are willing, I can make it seem as if you can, Nadia confirmed.
“Yes,” I said, feeling light-headed.
George grabbed my left arm and hauled me into the hallway.
Once we reached the open doorway to the room next door, I spotted a dark-haired young woman struggling against Travis, Carlos, and two men I didn’t know. Travis’s bear hug had the girl’s arms pinned to her sides. The two new men held her legs still, and Carlos had his hand over her mouth, trying to contain her screams. Our presence surprised the girl enough for Travis and the others to wrestle her to her knees.
“Release her!” I shouted, shocking myself by repeating the order in crisp Russian.
Travis looked up in surprise and nearly lost his grip. He recovered a moment later, but I thought I saw a flash of amusement before he looked away.
“Get her to quit screaming first,” Carlos snapped.
I hadn’t noticed that the girl had renewed her verbal and physical struggles.
I can help once she is calmer, Nadia said, making it pretty obvious what I had to do.
“Calm down, save your strength,” I told the girl.
She twisted her head violently left and released a torrent of vicious speech that, loosely translated, meant, “Shut your face, stupid cow. I don’t need your help. I don’t want your help. These fools don’t know who they’re messing with. My father will kill every one of them.”
I provided the baffled men with a modified translation.
