Self Harm Awareness Day

Will you see the emotional scars?

Self Injury Awareness Day
is today March 1, 2014!

***********

Self Injury Awareness Day - Self-injury or self harming is when a person deliberately hurts themselves physically to deal with the emotional pain they are suffering.

When it comes to self-harm, cutting is thought of as the main way people hurt themselves. But burning, bruising and scratching are amongst other methods used by people who are distressed.  Another misconception is that it's mainly teenage girls that use this coping mechanism - but it also includes people of both sexes and all ages, races and backgrounds.  So why do it?

This mechanism can provide people with a sensation that 'breaks feelings of numbness'.  This emotional pain is caused by issues such as low-self esteem, trauma, perfectionism and abuse.   A person can go on suffering like this while telling no-one and feeling uable to break the cycle.  So how can you help and raise awareness?

Firstly print out a fact sheet, depending on who you are and how you want to help.  From parents and friends, to pamphlets for males and teachers, there is unique advice available for everyone.  Hand these out, or pin them up and use the online templates to send letters off to radio shows or your local MP.  For more information, go to the Self Injury Awareness Day website.

Here's what some are saying about this page turning series...

"I think people need to read this book and get a perspective on what actually happens and how depression affects us all!" - Amazon Reviewer (Silenced)

"This is one of the most wicked books that I have ever read. Some of the scenes will make you shudder and want to throttle the main character to her senses."- Amazon Reviewer (Silenced)

"The book in no way promotes self-harming and identifies some of the risks of it. As a parent it also makes you think about how when you think you are doing the right thing by your kids, it may not be what they interpret." - Amazon Reviewer (Silenced)

"I recommend this to anyone reader who loves Christian suspicion or just wants to read for fun."- Amazon Reviewer (Silenced 2: The Overtaking)

"I think I connected with Amber in a way, fighting the urge of being depressed and not always accepted by the ones you love. Sometimes it takes a tragedy to find who is true family and friends. Learning to love yourself for you and having faith you won't cave under pressure.
Out of the whole book the ending was my favorite, because it goes to show you can overcome all things through Christ.  " - Amazon Reviewer (Silenced 2: The Overtaking)

"The title of the book says it all. You can overcome anything through family, friends, support, and most of all Jesus. The ending was a great little twist for me and though it was perfect for this story. This author did a terrific job." - Amazon Reviewer (Silenced 2: The Overtaking)

What Does It Take?

Several people that I have come to meet has asked me the same question... How do you come up with the idea's for a story and how do you write them? Well, the answer to this question can vary depending on what author/writer you ask. I feel there are no right or wrong answers to this question either. So, I'll tell you from my perspective.

First and for most, writing is a complex world. There's always something new to learn. Most of the time, when ideas come to me, I write them down and over time these ideas can be put together in a book. So, I take two different ideas, from two different times and place them together. Do I map out the plot? No, I don't. I write as I go. Some may say this isn't correct and some may agree that there's no right way to go about writing a book.

I begin with the rough draft. I keep writing not worrying about anything else. Once the rough draft is done, it's time to read it through. (Sometimes I read it more than once) After the full read through, I go back and do my edits. I changes places where I feel the plot isn't smooth or if I used the wrong name on a dialogue tag. I check the spelling, grammar, and comma usage. Once I polish this manuscript up, I contact close family and have them read it. They eventually find issues that need fixed that I didn't see because I'm too close with the story.

Once my feedback is final from those I know, off to a professional editor my manuscript goes. Although I had a great, close friend as the professional editor, I'm looking into finding an editor who does it for a living and paying for the services. Once I get their suggestions back and make my changes, I format the book for the file type, in my case it's an ebook and print copies.

You may ask, well, if you've written books where can I find them? At this moment in time, they are still on a thumb drive I have in my computer right now. I had them out there for the world to read but I found some errors within both books, I decided to take them off the market to do some improvements in them. Once they are revised, I'll put them back out there for the world to read.

So, my idea's I get I guess you could say just come to me. I don't think about them too hard. Sometimes I get inspiration from a dream or even riding down the road. It's hard to tell when an idea will hit me. My best suggestion for those who want to write is to write from the heart. Always write to express yourself rather than impress others. This is what makes each of us unique. Lastly, never and I mean NEVER give up.

If you find yourself in doubt, step back and ask yourself.... Why did I want to write this story to begin with? Once you can answer this, take a few days and think about it to be sure. Afterward, go back to your manuscript and try again. You can do it. You are good enough!

5 Things I Learned While Writing My First Novel

Some people, well actually, there's probably a lot of people who wake up one morning with the sudden urge to write. Then, there are those people who seem like they were born to write. I would say I fall into both of these. I knew I was a great writer with some talent while I was in High School. My English teacher constantly told me how great she thought I'd do with writing amazing books. This is what inspired me. I began writing Poetry at first. But this didn't seem to scratch that itch for the lack of better words. One assignment I had while in school was to write a short story. This is where I realized that I love to write. Although life had taken me in a different direction, I still wrote when I can. As an example, in a journal.

Several years after writing this short story, I became a mother. One day while my baby sister was visiting, we decided to go through old boxed in my apartment so I could get a little organization within the apartment. She came across this short story and read it. She told me it was really good and that I should continue it into a longer story. This inspired me. This was in 2005.

I begin plotting out a more structured outline for the entire story. Wanting to expand it. While writing it, I've learned some very valuable things during this time that I'd like to pass on to those who are looking into writing more.

So here are the 5 Things I Learned While Writing My First Novel:

1. Never Give Up- This is one thing that I seemed to struggle with at first. It seemed like no matter how much time and how much I poured my heart into it, I had this little voice within telling me I can't do this. I'm not a writer, I only think I am. It sounds crazy but it's true. There were times I felt it was nothing but trash. Did I quit? No! I didn't. I pushed myself to continue and I planned even more. There were times where I hit what they call a "writer's block." There's ways to over come this. I'll be posting these ways a bit later on in another post.

2. Create Deadlines- This is one thing that I had to get used to. I didn't want to be just a writer. I wanted to be a great one. I think that when it comes to writing, deadlines are a must. As an example, when writing, create a deadline for when you want to finish the work your currently doing. This helps with self discipline which is I think is a must within the writing world.

3. Set Goals- This set was very easy for me but it also ties in with number two. Set the goals and a deadline for when you want to meet this goal. Here is a suggestion- "Write (insert number) words per week." This is a goal and it has a deadline.

4. Write, Write, & Write- I don't think I can stress this enough. I think the more you write- the better you get at it. This pretty much talks for itself. But it really doesn't matter where or what you write. As an example, when I feel overloaded by my novel, I turn to my blog. I also take a break from writing and find time for me. This is when I feel the most relaxed about writing and where my best idea's come from. If you find it hard to write, take a break and read. Read anything. A book.. a magazine... a newspaper... anything!

5. Don't let others get you down!- This is, in my opinion, one of the most important. I've had people tell me that my dream of being a published author is crap and I'll never reach it. I've had them tell me that my dream of writing in general is just a front for not actually doing something with my life. Well, these only put more of a desire within me for wanting to reach my main goal. These people don't realize they're not hurting me, they're helping me. Use the negative words for inspiration to write. One thing I feel as a writer you need to learn, is this: Words are words. Do not write to impress. Write to express. If you can understand this, you're off to a great start.

Silenced- Characters

One thing that I like to do is find a picture of what I envisioned my characters to look like. As I was searching today, I found two perfect pictures.

Here is what I imagined Amber, the main character of Silenced looks like:

Here is what I imagined her best friend, Casey looking like:

Both girls are in the 12th grade and going through some ordeals that define them. They are both confused and just trying to find out who they are. Hope this help all the readers who will one day obtain a copy of Silenced when it's released.

By looking at the pictures, what do you think their personalities are?
